NCI is supporting researchers at ANU in their efforts to learn more about Earth’s inner core. This enigmatic structure is closely related to the generation and maintenance of Earth’s magnetic field. Each line is a seismic wave that has travelled through the inner core on its way to the receiver on the opposite side of Earth. Red lines are slow waves. Blue lines are fast waves. In a similar method to CAT scanning, the team use these waves to illuminate the internal structure of the inner core.
