The new NCI National Facility peak system, vayu, launched in November 2009 by Senator the Hon. Kim Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, passed its final acceptance tests early in April 2010, and a full service to research users commenced on 6 April 2009. Vayu, a Oracle (Sun) Constellation, comprises nearly 12,000 compute cores, 36 terabytes of main memory, and in excess of 800 terabytes of global storage. The peak performance, now fully configured, is about 140 terrflops. Plans are being developed to exapnd the capability of the system by a further 25 percent later in 2010.
