NCI has officially welcomed RMIT as a Collaborator.
RMIT signed the NCI Collaboration agreement in January 2015. NCI Director Professor Lindsay Botten said he was delighted to welcome RMIT on board.
"RMIT researchers have been amongst the largest, sustained users of NCI's services for more than a decade, undertaking impactful, applied research.
"It is thus very pleasing to see RMIT join the NCI Collaboration which now includes eight research-intensive individual universities, state-based consortia of universities from NSW and Queensland, and three of the national science agencies of the Australian Government."
Director of eResearch at RMIT, Professor Heinrich Schmidt, said the collaboration would boost RMIT's globally relevant research, which critically and increasingly depends on computational modelling.
"Our research strengths, such as in ab initio quantum physics of advanced material properties that are potentially relevant for future quantum computing or in biophysical cell membrane processes for medical intervention and development of biosensors, have an insatiable appetite for compute hours. They also demand algorithm innovation and software-defined virtualisation of physical laboratory-based experiments and their interconnection with computational modelling and simulation," he said.
"This partnership sets RMIT on a path for consolidating its supercomputer use and rebalancing its in-house, regional and national compute investments," said Dr Salvy Russo, Physics Professor, NCI user and eResearch Deputy Director at RMIT.
