NCI congratulates Australia’s newest Superstars of STEM announced today by the Minister for Industry and Science, the Hon Ed Husic MP, and in particular two NCI users selected as part of this elite group of brilliant STEM role models: Dr Chiara Holgate (The Australian National University – hydroclimatology) and Dr Nicky Wright (The University of Sydney – geoscience).
Dr Chiara Holgate uses NCI’s high-performance computing and data resources to run simulations investigating how moisture moves from the ocean through the atmosphere to land, including how changes in this movement affect extreme weather events. Dr Nicky Wright draws on NCI infrastructure and services as part of her work reconstructing the Earth’s surface through deep time, in order to explore past changes in our climate.
Superstars of STEM is an initiative of Science & Technology Australia (STA) that aims to smash gender assumptions about who can work in science, technology, engineering and maths. The program equips women and non-binary STEM experts, selected through a highly competitive selection process, with advanced communication skills and opportunities to inspire the next generations of young Australians into STEM study and careers. Created by STA in 2017, the initiative is funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Industry, Science and Resources.
As an affiliate member of STA, NCI is proud to support the science education and outreach that STA delivers and looks forward to continuing to participate in flagship STA programs, including as a sponsor of Science Meets Parliament in 2023.
Congratulations again to Dr Holgate and Dr Wright, and all of the Superstars of STEM announced today. Read the full announcement on the Science and Technology website.
