What is a VL?
Fully equipped, one-stop-shops for computational research.
Virtual laboratories are online platforms that bring together everything researchers need to analyse data, collaborate and innovate.
Virtual laboratories make datasets, state-of-the-art analysis and visualisation tools easily accessible in a ‘one-stop shop’ environment. This means large datasets don’t have to constantly be moved between platforms to perform different functions.
NCI’s unique integration of high-performance cloud and supercomputing with Australia’s largest data storage facilities makes it an ideal host for virtual laboratories and the NCI Research Engagement and Innovation Team are world leaders in this revolutionary new technology.
NCI has a lead role in the development of three Virtual Laboratories funded by the Australian Government through the National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources (NeCTAR) project:
- the Climate and Weather Science Laboratory
- the All-Sky Virtual Observatory
- the Virtual Geophysics Laboratory
NCI also hosts Geoscience Australia’s Australian Geoscience Data Cube project funded by the Australian Space Research Program, and is a partner of the NeCTAR-supported Biodiversity & Climate Change Virtual Laboratory.
